About this role
Overview
Models assign codes that look right and bill wrong: an ICD-10-CM code one notch short on specificity, a CPT modifier that changes the whole claim, an NCCI edit ignored, an E&M level the note never supported. A single miscode is the difference between a clean claim and a denial or an audit finding, and a certified coder is who catches it.
As a Medical Coder you'll evaluate AI coding output against real guidelines and the underlying documentation, and write the assignments a careful auditor would sign off on.
What you’ll actually do
- Write prompts that test coding accuracy: ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS assignment, modifiers, and E&M leveling from real clinical documentation.
- Review AI output for wrong or unspecified codes, bad modifiers, missed NCCI edits, and codes the note does not support, and rate the reasoning.
- Write the correct coding when the model falls short, tied to the documentation and current guidelines.
Roles this fits
Common backgrounds: Medical Coder (CPC/CCS), Coding Auditor, Medical Billing Specialist.
What we look for
- Hands-on medical coding experience, ideally with a credential such as CPC or CCS.
- Fluency across ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS, with coding guidelines and payer edits.
- Clear written English: your explanations are the training signal.
- No degree required. We care about what you can do, not where you learned it.
Compensation
$75 to $125+/hr depending on task difficulty and specialization. Many contributors add $10k to $100k+ a year; some make it their full-time income.
